Do you want to be unstuck, or do you want to get unstuck?
There’s a world of difference between the two.
I think a lot of us, in our writing, get frustrated with the act of stuckness. It’s one of the reasons I do the work I do, trying to help authors understand how to get unstuck.
Generally speaking, stuckness is something that happens to us. Not something we make happen. So because we didn’t choose it, we are very often tempted to want to be unstuck, and get frustrated with being stuck.
But we don’t get all the way from the frustration to the “what can I do about this” feeling. (Responsibility/guilt.)
The next time you feel yourself being stuck in the manuscript, dear writer, do something active to change it. I give a lot of suggestions on the QuitCast if you need suggestions, but the more we allow ourselves to sit in frustration about being stuck, without doing something to get unstuck, the more likely we are to stay there longer than we need to.
And I say this as much to myself as to anyone. I want to g-e-t unstuck. So I’m off to call a friend to talk about this dumb book. lol.
Hope everyone has a great weekend, and stay bright, my friends.
