Do you get joy pennies from planning vacations?
If no, what about a vacation gives you the most joy pennies? And if yes, what part specifically gives you the pennies?
I’m planning two different vacations with two different groups of people. One where we’re all high in Futuristic, and one high Context.
My Context friend and I had a conversation last night about this vacation, and granted, it’s almost all planned out for us already (we’re going on a cruise, so there isn’t much to “choose” to do), but we had a conversation about how they experience the future, as it relates to this, and it fascinated me.
So this made me want to know… how do other people do this? One of the questions we commonly ask in our Strengths for Writers in-person workshops is, “where do you fall on the continuum of vacation planning, from ‘pack your bags and go’ to ‘give me six months or a year of runway'” and it’s been one of the most helpful conversations I’ve watched happen.
Just this idea that orientation to time and planning is different for everyone. (And it’s situational, too, right? Some people said they prefer to plan out everything about their family life, but not their personal life. Some people plan more with kids, some less. Everyone is so different.)
But I want to hear about your joy pennies specifically as it relates to vacations. What makes you the most content/peaceful/happy about vacations?
For me, there is nothing more exciting than the planning. I get the most joy in the process from researching the place we’re going, asking all my friends for their suggestions, figuring out what might be fun to do, seeing all the potential options, and then narrowing down what I want to get out of the experience, and making sure I can get those pennies when I get there. (My sister is phenomenal at this, btw, that Individualization/Achiever.)
Of course, I’ve also learned (thanks to friends), I will get joy pennies no matter what, when I travel with my friends. So I always try to maximize time with friends when I travel. But every time I start planning again, this question fascinates me.
What about you? So, here’s the question again:

** Joy pennies are hits of energy (content/happy/secure) that are evidence you are enjoying the process enough, it’s making energy pennies for you.
Absolutely!!!
For me, if the actual vacation itself is 10 out of 10, then the planning is right up there around 8.5+/10.
Since I know my favorite part of vacationing (exploring the new-to-me locale in my own vehicle/rental), it’s a blast researching to determine where I might want to go, and what other activities might be able to highlight that local experience.
Love this post, as I never before thought how someone plans for a trip might provide insight into other personality aspects. And also appreciate the definition / explanation of Joy pennies. 😁
