As someone who would have said I “grew up poor” because of my earliest memories, I usually identify with people who struggle with finances.
But when I made a comment about Snapple, a friend mentioned that they never drank it. Assuming it was generational (they’re 8 years older than me), I chalked it up to being a 90s kid.
They said, “no, because pop was cheap, especially in 2 liter if you wanted to drink something sweet.” I couldn’t afford to choose Snapple, they were telling me.
And I had to reconcile for a minute with the perspective that when I wanted a sweet drink, I could afford not to think about price as a selection for my preferences.
Privilege is always invisible to those who have it. And visible to those who do not.
(Let’s read that above sentence one more time…)
