What’s the best birthday you’ve ever celebrated and what made it great?
I was asked this question yesterday and I realized just how much it reveals about a person, what makes them remember things from the past. I answered about my 40th birthday weekend, where I spent time with four of my favorite people doing my favorite things (playing games, watching Buffy, eating great food, drinking great wine, and being together). And when he answered, he talked about the time he spent with the most important person in his life, which told me a lot about him, as well.
I collect questions like this because when I’m sitting around with groups of my friends (this often happens at conferences these days), I want to get to know them better, and be more connected to them. And I’ve found some great ones over the years, but I think this might be one of my favorites.
Of course, I’m also aware that I don’t have unlimited minutes with people, and I want to make each minute count. So this will become an important part of my list of things I want to know about the people who matter to me.
So tell me, friend, (recognizing, of course, that birthdays can be problematic and not everyone has happy birthday memories, and if that’s the place you’re in, you have all my hugs… I hope the next one is better!) what is your best birthday memory? Or what birthday memory do you still want to make?
